Past few weeks......Mean of the mean is the mean...

OMG! past few weeks have been very very crazy for me as I have had a very busy work-related life and also a lot of assignments for STATS. A fast-track course in statistics requires one assignment every thursday while each assignment takes between 10 to 15 hours. Anyhow , tomorrow will be the end of it and I'm counting seconds for 10:00 pm when I hand-in my paper. For today, I will be reviewing "Statistical siginificane", "Interval estimates for Mean and population proportion", z and t distribtutions, normal and binomial distribution. Continues and Discrete r.vs and hypothesis testing and the mean of the sample mean which is the mean and it is mean to mean that you don't know what I mean.

Done with Exams+....

Wow..Finally, one of the best feelings in the world is to feel free from obligations...Past few weeks has been really crazy in my life and I have not been able to focus on my hobbies which is a bit sad....but I had no other options. I had to arrange so many things and moreover than anything, exams and assignments were driving me crazy. last night I wrote the exam for Organization Behavior which was my last FW2010-2011 course. Looking up to summer for more research and I have an appoinment with Grad School director in the coming week.. It paves my way for the future... (fingers crossed)...

Germany Trip

We came to Germany last week as we were visiting CeBIT. We had a flight from Toronto to Munich and another one from Munich to Hannover. We met a nice German family and they invited us to their AMAZING small town called Heidesheim. WE WILL NEVER FORGET THIS CITY.

Tomorrow, we are going to London, UK and from there we will go to Sheffield.

A snapshot of my life in 27 Jan 2011

Started working on a replication at 8:30 AM and have been busy since then. I don't know if I was ready for this much load but I got to handle it anyway. This week, starting Saturday (a trip to colocation for 8 hours) was one of the worst weeks of my life so far. Living in a IT war zone, have seen attacks from almost anywthere. From team members to customers . School also had made sure that I get enought problems. Two assignments were appointed this week and I have to wrap them up before i head to Germany. Anyhow, that's what is it for now and I got to deal with it....

Challenges of Business

Looking at the recent business catastrophes and corruptions, one must ask that what’s going on in our business sector. While the general belief indicates that with so many business experts and MBAs in the market, business health should be improved, evidences and stats show otherwise. Business corruption is not a new product and has been around for centuries. To understand the underlying reasons that cause business corruption we should examine components that are affecting business in general. One these elements are established and definitions are stabilized, we can see their impact on business growth or failure.
Every business at one point or another is dealing with internal and external factors. These factors are divided to three group of General, Specific and Internal. “General environment”, as an external factor and being the widest one, is the part that consists of six key forces. We can say that all businesses are almost equally exposed to these general factors. Here they are:
1. Economic forces (downsizing, bankruptcies, recession, boom, exchange rates, interest rates)
2. Political forces ( New regulations, de-regulations , border regulations)
3. Competitive forces (pure competition, monopoly, oligopoly)
4. Technological forces
5. Global forces (9-11, SARS, Hurricanes, Trade agreements such as NAFTA , climate change)
6. Societal forces (societal norms, values, ethical beliefs, demographic changes)
The second group of elements which are closer to the kernel of business is the “specific group” . This group consists of parties and groups that have a direct influence on the business. Here are the most important parties:
• Customers
• Suppliers
• Labor pool
• Competitors
• Unions
• Resellers/Agents/Distributes
• Local public
• Media
• Local and federal Government

This group sometimes is called “Stakeholders environment”. This becomes more clear when stakeholders are defined as “individuals or groups with whom business interacts and who have a stake , or vested interest in the business” .
The third group, which contains elements insides the organization is called “Internal environment” . Three major parties that form the internal environment are as follow:

1- People – People Management
2- Business strategy
3- Business Structure


Business and social responsibility:
There is no doubt that every business’s primary goal is to provide goods and services in a profitable manner. Although a lot of business efforts are focused on fiscal activities, there is a societal aspect of the business that some companies fail to provision. This aspect consists of:

• Environmental issues
• Bribery and corruption
• Workplace condition
• Product liability
• Political influence
• Ethical issues
Despite the old and common belief that business and ethics are not heavily interrelated, the recent trend indicates that there is a demand from society for businesses to act ethically. With the growth of media and its coverage, a lot of ethical or unethical behaviors of business have been exposed to the public and has resulted in a dramatic change in society-business relation. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to those obligation and responsibilities of an organization that goes beyond the production of good/services and acting within the legal framework.

It seems to be better when you try to make the best of everyday. Have been doing it lately and it sounds better to me. Not a very big fan of long-term schedules. Well the goals and hobbies have to be clear, however it feels more practical if you focus on execution of each day separately.

Looking for time...

I have been looking for sometime now to see if i can get any extra time to spend it on my hobbies and favorites. so far, nothing good has happened. I found it easier to look at one day and trying to make the best of it rather than looking at a month or a week. Will see if i can make the best of each day. Will write it down here in a week or two...

A mind that is stretched by a new experience

Being busy with a lot of open projects at work and school has made me a bit tired. I get off work and have to go to school. I finish an exam at school and I have to deal with a tight deadline at work. Sometimes, I want to “pause” what’s going on around me and go and walk for couple of hours. I need to get my thoughts organized and defragged. I feel a subtle touch of fear in missing deadlines or missing important tasks. I’m always repeating/reviewing my Todo’s list in an effort to prevent any missed task. I hope I can stretch my mind over all these tasks and get to a level where I can handle
Multi- Multi -tasking .

Business administration

It takes so much effort and work to make a successful business. Not knowing that, can make you work 24 * 7 and not even achieving half of your goals . You should stand up for your goals and it's hard but fruitful. Made a decision long time ago but never had a chance to dedicate my energy for it. It's excellent implementation of Information Technology. It's IT with the highest possible EXCELLENCE.

Mixture of feelings...

It's a strange stage when your feelings are constantly affected by your daily life. let's put it this way: Stating a day assuming that it will be a great day and you know that you have taken care of everything that is related to you and therefore it will be a fine day. Nevertheless, as time goes by, you realize that the day is not going as you have planned. why? because, others have their own impact on your day. They may change its direction, lighten up or even make it a not-so-perfect day. Well you may say we should not let others to do so and I really want to accept it but, the problem underlying this topic is that you don't want to ignore other's feeling. Long time ago when i was involved in some NLP courses, we learned how to pass everyday's facts through pre-defined filters so you may totally change the meaning of a fact and make it more pleasant. The question that I have been struggling with is that how one can define the Quality of communication in a conversation. Is there any Best, worst, average case ? if there is , what are the figures? Your conversations with your close friends and your life's key people should not become a hassle. I hope that i can find a reliable solution for this issue as it's becoming very annoying lately. So annoying...

Life and its complexities....

Well, there are so many things that can go wrong and trust me if they can (even with 0.1% possibility), they will go wrong. Not being able to realize what has been happening for past few days, I have a very creepy feeling. I just don’t understand my thoughts and moreover I can not even make any sense of them. Just like an accident that puts the victim in a shocking position, I have been wounded by the high volume of different things and different feeling that I have been experiencing. I’m left with the hope to see and experience what I was considering as “Happiness”. The mind, itself and its logical analysis remain quite amazed with what heart and feeling can do to human’s body and soul. The soul, despite its meta-physical nature, can still cause a sensible/touchable kind of pain. So far, I can almost assure myself that there are a lot of hidden , but direct, connections between heart and soul and soul and mind. One should put the order as follow: You see things or hear things that you should not (because you know that they will affect you in a very bad way) , your heart will receive an “Unhappy” signal from your senses. It will pass the complain to your mind and mind will start complaining about some other semi-related issues. And when they see that no one cares, they both, at the same time and in an endless effort try to bother the soul. Soul , with a lot of capacity, starts receiving all the negative signals and soon will become overwhelmed. When soul reaches its limits and passes the pre-defined thresholds, (based on your previous experiences and also mindset and moreover the average of the market!) , it will start sending a lot of “Unhappy” signals to your heart and mind. Well, as you can probably predict, the story gets back to its beginning and starts all over again. We can call it an “infinite loop.” Cone and help me here. It’s your part to sit and imagine the rest of the story and if you get chance, drop me a line if you know of any solution that will send you out of this infinite loop.

1st April - New Day - New Age - New Habbit -

It was at my birthday that I realized something has been changed.

Something inside. I remember that I used to be a succesfull Manager (backhome) and I used to deal with 800 students and 40 personnels. Well, that was 5 years ago. Now, things are changed. I travelled from a developing country and I started a new life in North America--which from many aspects is much more developed that where I used to work....

When I started to adopt myself with this new culture and enviornment, I knew that it's a time-consuming process. It's an evolution and needs time.

Now, I feel that I can start. Well, i haven't started yet. I'm now planning for an start and that should happen soon.

Today i have started to count the minutes before I start. When I start, I see that goal will be achieved....It was easy last time, for sure, it will easier this time. I have all my expriences with me. Now it's time for a little bit more fun....

Modern office technologies: hassle or relief?

Have computers given us more time to spend on our hobbies or have they stolen our peace of mind and increased our discomforts and difficulties in the workplace? Computers and information systems, Internet, public networks, and modern communications are key elements of a widespread and evolving phenomenon that can be called “Digital Evolution”. This dominating phenomenon is permeating to every aspect of our lives and will continue to change society and by extension the workplace. From the beginning of this evolution, we were told that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was invented to simplify our work-life and decrease the complexity of our daily tasks.

Although ITCs have increased the speed of processes and automated many challenging and complex procedures, at the same time they have caused a variety of problems that never existed before. In some places such as IT companies, where IT technologies are playing a critical role, human and computer interaction can be very stressful. In this human-to-computer interaction, it is the computer that will not rest, will not feel, and will not succumb to stress. The anxiety and tension caused by ITC is not what we were promised and advertised by the media. Ads in newspapers and magazines, commercials on TV, and giant posters on billboards all brag about how perfect technology is and often conceal the disadvantages that ITC and ITC alone can bring along.
In contrast to public media, scientific researchers are more conscious about advantages and disadvantages of innovative and modern technologies. If the major goal of ICT is to assist people with their difficulties and consequently decrease their stress level, this goal has not yet been accomplished. In fact, ICT is causing far more anxiety and tension than helping us pave our way to an easy and stress-free life.
According to the 2000 General Social Survey (GSS) of Statistics Canada, nearly 60% of Canadian workers have used computer in their workplace. Moreover, a comparison between GSS 2000 and GSS 1993 shows a 100% growth in the usage of computers and modern technologies at the workplace. In spite of the fact that ITC requires operational skills, its fast growth has caused a tremendous demand for people and organizations to increase their computer and IT skills. In most places, people are expected to know how to operate computers, printers, advanced phones and digital devices. Emails, internet-based communications, and online meetings and presentations are now part of our daily tasks. In an atmosphere that companies and organizations are tightly competing for technological advantages by adopting new ICTs, workers frequently find themselves being surrounded by new technologies and devices that require technical knowledge and skills. In such a demanding environment, “Survival of the fittest” can be read as “Survival of the most-skilled”. In view of the fact that acquiring computer and IT skills is a challenge, it has become a nightmare for a vast number of workers. In fact, a significant amount of workplace stress is associated with the need to learn new ITC skills.

In addition to all the anxiety generated by ITCs, technical failures are not any of help to our hectic lives.Companies and organizations are relying on new technologies so much so that computers and digital systems are taking the control of information flow and business directions. In such environment, computers are the corner stone of communication and procedures. This means that if a technical problem occurs, a huge part of an automated process will fail and this failure causes many consequences such as loss of data, delay or failure in projects, passing deadlines, etc. Each one of the mentioned issues can be held responsible for an immense amount of stress in the work place.

As an IT manager for an IT-based company, I have seen a huge difference between practical and theoretical point of views in IT industry. In theory, we always consider the bright part in which computers and digital devices behave logically and productively. Well, that is not the case when it comes to reality. Implementation of modern technologies can be more complex than what we often see in our estimates and designs, and therefore their consequences can go beyond our predictions. Computers and information technologies are changing our today’s life style and shaping our future. If we were to compare our lives with those of our parents, we would realize that we are experiencing a much harder life and a busier age than they did so without relying on all these sophisticated technologies.

Little Prince

When I first read the Little Prince, I was 14 and since then, I read it every year. It's amazing how the meaning of this book has been changed everytime that I have read it. Everytime, I have found new examples matching with what the story is talking about and it seems that the whole society is making more mistakes as time goes by. Each year , I find more struggles, more issues, more complexities and less global happiness. Where are we going? I don't know if anyone knows but i bet even leaders have no idea either. one question that the answer matters a lot is:

These Days....

It’s hard to believe that sometimes, some people come to your heart faster than you can track them. They come faster than you can love them or even faster than you can like them. It was a quiet afternoon when I realized that my heart is taken. It was so fast that it didn’t let me to be prepared for it. It was fast because it was not happening through regular senses. I didn’t fall for an ordinary feeling. It was an extra-ordinary feeling that took control of my heart. Shall I name it Love? If this is love, what were all other feelings that I had before and named them love?

I’m confused because I searched my experiences, other’s experiences with this hope to find out what this feeling is…

The more I searched; more I found out that this is not a regular and known feeling.

I will write more about if I find more about it but don’t expect that much …

Sunset Beach....

It was spring in the Air and I was happy. I was really happy, my dear friend was standing close to me and we were at sunset beach. There was no sunset, but there were nice stars and I could see the moon.

A sad Salman, a very SAD ONE!!

Each and every one of us, has his/her own issue. It's life which is playing with us. In the world of illusions, we just see what we have to see.We just play, What the director of life has decided for us to play. I know that it's sad but it's true. There are some moments in the life that we are just behind a glass, we see, it makes us sad, we want to change it, we reach our hand out to touch it, to change it. Our hands hit the glass and it hurts. it really does. We can see, we can feel, We can't change. It's hard to see when a man cry, when a real man cry. When a real man, which is basically capable of doing anything, can not do anything. When human with all its complex and advanced knowledge can not do anything. Who can stand this sadness? We can't do anything..........

We are just some simple part of this life, it's the director of this life which gives us roles to play. If the role is over, we are over too ........

Novels and their Power

Many of us have experienced that special moment when we fall in love with a book and can’t stop reading it. For 13-year-old Mordecai Richler, the moment comes when he starts All Quiet on the Western Front. He starts reading the book and soon fills seduced by the novel. It creates turbulence in his life and eventually obligates him to see the truth. The novel has a deep effect on his point of view. The novel changes his assumptions about fiction and Germans

For the young Richler, novels are untrue and romantic stories. He looks for facts and reality not for untrue novels: “I want fact. I can’t be bothered with stories … I just haven’t got the time for such non-sense” (P 65). There are some reasons that he likes facts and true stories. He use these book to show that he is a smart boy. As a teenage boy, he is experiencing lack of attention from girls. This is one of the reasons he pays more attention to reading serious book. Despite this fact he falls in love with the novel and, like all the great loves, the affair challenges his presumptions. He admits this when he writes:
“I never expected that a mere novel, a stranger’s tale, could actually be dangerous, creating such turbulence in my life, obligating me to question so many received ideas”(P 66). Reading the All Quiet on the Western Front wakes him up to show him the power of novel and its effects.


In 1944 and before Richler reads the novel, He was wishing “an excruciating death” for every German on the earth. He was cheering every German city that was bombed. He saw Germans as cruel enemies. When he started reading the book, he didn’t know that it would change his impression about Germans. The novel that reveals a lot of truths that Richler didn’t realize was unaware of. One of the truths is that Germans are like any other human being. As story goes, he finds more similarity between German soldiers and himself, which enables him to empathize with them. This empathy continues and eventually novel wins his love for a German’ soldier.

Novels and fictions will help us to sense and experience the story. They will touch the soul and heart of reader and eventually will help him or her to understand the story. As an example the recalled novel creates a connection between being a young Jewish in 1944 and feeling sorry for the death of German soldiers. It shows that such a thing is possible through the magic of novel and its power to open the eyes of readers.
All Quiet on the Western Front is the sample of a powerful novel which “seduces” Richler and eventually changes his worldview and reading habits.

The Old Woman

“The Old Woman” is about a woman called Molly who has left England and has immigrated to Canada to live with her husband. They had known each other for few months when they married in England. Soon after marriage her husband has left her to come to Canada. For her, it has been three years of waiting and loneliness while her husband has been busy with his beloved power-house.
A house close to a noisy waterfall, several miles away from the nearest town, taciturn people with French-Canadian culture are numerous problems that she has to deal with. The author, Joyce Marshall, has pointed loneliness as one of the most important issues that can hurt an immigrant in a new country.
The story starts in the station at Montreal. Molly has found that her husband is changed. “It was more than the absence of uniform. His face seemed so still, and there was something about his mouth—a sort of slackness. And at times she would turn and find him looking at her, his eyes absorbed and watchful” (Marshall 34). The word “still”, “slackness” and “watchful” shows that he is not interested to see his wife. Molly feels that her husband doesn’t have enough attention to her. Despite the sad condition, she tries to tell herself that her husband would be closer to her when they get home. It’s a romantic morning when they leave the train. “It was grey dawn faintly disturbed with pink when they left the train” (Marshall 34). After a long journey over the snow they arrive home. Molly is tired and she needs a quiet and friendly environment but the sound of the waterfall is annoying her.
This inconvenience situation and lack of attention from her husband is increasing her fear of loneliness. It reminds her last three years, three years of waiting and loneliness. She has left England to escape the loneliness. She deserves it. She doesn’t have family or relative and she is far from her friends, this fact is increasing her dependency on her husband. He doesn’t help her to settle into new life.

Another issue that Molly is experiencing is environmental loneliness. Not only her husband doesn’t spend time with her but also she doesn’t know any neighbour. As Marshal writes:
“There were no neighbours within miles, no telephone calls or visits from milkman or baker—only one of Toddy’s sweepers coming in once a fortnight with supplies and mail from Missawani” (P 37.) If it was a crowded and friendlier neighborhood or if she knew some people around her, there would be fewer issues. Coldness, grey and cloudy sky, lack of sun, taciturn people are parameters that are helping loneliness to take over molly’s life. When I first came to Canada, I was living in Richmond Hill which is a quiet area. I can remember how lonely I felt. I felt there's no one in my life that I can share my feelings with. I came to the conclusion that I’m unacceptable and unlovable. But actually that wasn’t because of me, it was society which made me feel that way. Molly in “The Old Woman” has the same feeling. She came from a European-style country where people are friendlier and warmer. It must be so hard for her to leave in a house so far from any neighborhood.

Immigration is a long and complex process and relocation to another country is not easy. A different culture and a different life-style will increase the issues that an immigrant is experiencing in the new country. Without any doubt, loneliness is one the most important problems that will affect a newcomer’s life. “The Old Woman” has demonstrated that how a woman can be hurt by her husband if he doesn’t show compassion and understanding for her situation as an immigrant in the new country.

Crash

Last night I watched the movie “Crash”. It was a good movie. It has a great plot. It’s considering real life issues. From realistic point of view, this is a nice and fair movie but at the same time it’s experiencing lack of humanity. Usually you can learn something from movies. Personally I go to movies to be trained, to be entertained. This movie is describing the reality of some people’s every day tragedy. I didn’t learn anything from that. I was looking for a great message in every section of movie and unfortunately it leaved me craving for that.
I would have rather seen The Upside of Anger. When we begin with anger, violence and uneven life, we should address it correctly. Director leaved us at the same side as we began the story.
If director is looking for us to come and finalize the story, he has not given us enough resources to do so. Nonetheless, I want to say that this movie is an excellent depiction of what America has become because of the lack of communication, understanding and emotion. I strongly believe that at the 21st century we expect art to come and help us to change this crimson world.

Lack of Sleep.

As a busy person, I have been always working on several tasks simultaneously and eventually I don't get enough time to sleep. Those they were my colleague in Iran know me as a hard worker and none-stop guy. It was four years ago that I received a letter from Microsoft, appreciating my hardworking on IT and networking. At that time, I was thinking about Nerd wise life.

I was begging for a situation to work and live like Microsoft’s nerds. When I went to Canada, my dream welcomed true. I start working at a very high-tech position in an ASP company.
I was working from 8:30 AM till 1 or 2 AM. That was perfect. Doing several R&D tasks, I was extremely busy. I rarely found time to see my family and friends. Last June there was a communication issue between Vancouver and Vietnam VoIP routes. I spent almost 19 hours per day to solve that issue. As a person with bad headaches, sleep depriving is not a good
Option. Recently I have been sleeping even lower than 4 hours per 24 hours. Frequently I read some articles about the disadvantages of sleep depriving. I’m looking for a way to coordinate my tasks with the time that I have. Your comments are highly appreciated.

Vital Information:
• In a person who is sleep-deprived, one part of the brain shuts down while other parts will kick in to help compensate.
• Regardless of the brain's attempt to overcome sleep deprivation, a sleep-deprived person cannot perform mental tasks as well as someone who is well-rested.
• For brain recovery, the early part of sleep each night is the most important.

Unbelievable Creativity....

I have been in touch with Japanese people last week and to be honest to you I have learned tens of ideas from them.
They are humans with high level IQ, powerful imagination and excellent execution. Their creativity is awesome. They love to be pioneer; they love to create new and unique things. Their best products are dedicated for internal usage whereas they export their low quality products. Amazing thing is that their low quality product has the highest quality in the world. If you buy a car in Japan, it comes with full functionality. If you buy the same card made by Japan in another country you will find several missed facilities.

Everybody knows that Japan is not a wide country and they have lack of land for creating energy. But they need energy for their factories.
As the major city of Japan,Tokyo is the most populated city in the country. Everybody heard about its great and powerful intercity transportation.
Yeah, that’s it. They are using it as a source of electrical power. If you have been using metro entrances, you should be familiar with entrance stuffs like turnstiles.

As a populated city, everyday tens of thousands of people are passing turnstiles. Each time that a person passes these turnstiles is turning a turbine to creating electricity power.

Think about it and you will find out why they are becoming the leader of Technology and science.

Canada Day!

Three days ago,1st of July, was Canada day. We went to lakeshore to see the fire work. Toronto is a big city with normal population. But At that night, almost everyone was in the street. Tens of thousands of people were happy and all together to celebrate Canada day. They were all there to say that they are proud of this free and great country. I was proud too. We were all Persian but we were signing “O’ Canada “when we were sitting at lake shore. At a moment when I was whispering “Our home and native land!” I missed something in my heart. Canada was not my native land. How could I change my native land?

The idea of having a day for our country is a perfect one. But it shouldn’t contain any ideology or a religion. It should be all about Iran, just Iran, neither democratic nor any other kind of Iran. It should be dedicated to Iran itself.

Can You believe ....????!!!!!!!

I was working on a windows 2003 machine in Chicago today and I found that it needs to be updated with service pack 1.
As usual, I accepted Microsoft update request and then installation wizard appeared. I just shocked when I saw the file size, it was about 140 MB.

For me, it means that this …. Microsoft forgot to put half of kernel with the released version.

With a cable internet download time will be 3 mins.
With an ADSL bandwidth it will take 3 hours to download it.
With a dial-up connection , download time will be 18 hours.
(Consider that in this case you are sitting behind of your PC and your fingers are crossed to have a reliable connection)

Reiki (Episode II)

Stop and reflect for a moment. Imagine the implications of the universe around us made from energy which can be shaped and also manipulated by thoughts. This is the implication of both Quantum Physics and ancient Metaphysics. Reiki makes some diseases easier to explain, especially those which have no apparent physical cause. Also it makes miraculous cures easier to explain. For example there was research study done a couple years ago showing that prayer improves the health of those who are prayed for, the focus of intent in prayer sends thoughts out in the form of "I wish such-and-so to happen", so if the world is energy subject to the power of thought then prayers must work (depending on how clearly and carefully you hold and elaborate on the prayers or thoughts). Internet Pain

I had an IT class in Iran which was Internet Security. I was training a great book titled as "Hacker Exposed" and students were so happy with it. I suggest you to take a look at it.
In a country like Iran that we are using the Internet just for fun of it, security is not an issue. But for those that they are experiencing web-based life style, security is an important issue.

Network engineers have defined the following types of Internet Attacks:

• Social engineering
– Fooling the victim for fun and profit

• Impersonation
– Stealing access rights of authorized users

• Exploits
– Exploiting a hole in software or operating

• Transitive trust
– Exploiting host-host or network-network trust

• Data driven
– Trojans, trapdoors, viruses

• Infrastructure
– Taking advantage of protocol or infrastructure features or bugs

• Denial of service
– Preventing system from being used


I will do my best to dedicate one session to each title and clarify the exact meaning of each of them.
