What are the six attitudes of science? Determinism is the attitude of science that believes all events in the universe are orderly, lawful (consistent), and occur as the result of other events. This means that behavior does not occur "out of the blue;" all events have causes.
Empiricism is the attitude of science that values observing through an objective manner. The scientist must ignore personal attitudes and beliefs, and observe behavior without emotion, in order to effectively change the undesirable behavior.
Experimentation is the attitude of science in which manipulation of the independent variable produces a change in the dependent variable. Once a functional relation is observed, the researcher then can further analyze this relationship through experimentation.
Parsimony is the attitude of science that requires scientists to rule out simple answers to the results of a study or phenomena before looking further into more complicated explanations. All simple, logical explanations for phenomena under study must be ruled out before more complex or abstract explanations are considered.
Replication is the attitude of science that requires the repeating of experiments in order to determine the reliability and usefulness of findings. Replication is the ability to replicate an experiment and achieve the same results as previous studies. If a study is replicated and the results vary, the study is not valid. Additionally, the researchers must be exact in describing the experiment, enabling future researchers to replicate the study.
Philosophical Doubt is the attitude of science that encourages scientists to constantly doubt and question the rules of the world and known facts. This enables scientists to constantly be open to learning and researching.
