Linda & Ali, Two Worlds within Four Walls(Belgium, 2005, 93 min)
Directors: Lut Vandekeybus
Short Story : Linda and Ali are a somewhat unusual couple. Twenty years ago, Ali, a Muslim Qatari, was attending university in Arizona.
There he met Linda, an American who had converted from Catholicism to Islam while in her teens. They fell in love, married and moved to Doha, Qatar to raise their family in the Islamic tradition. Seven children later, Linda and Ali have established a routine but one that’s not entirely satisfactory to either one of them. The filmmaker spent a period of two years in their home - beginning just prior to the invasion of Iraq - intimately documenting their daily lives. The clashes of their household are sometimes caused by cultural differences between East and West, sometimes by differences between man and woman. The conflict comes to a head when Linda’s mother is hospitalized and she must return to the U.S. Can Linda and Ali’s love for each other and their children bridge their two disparate worlds? salaam, I was looking on the net and came across your comments on the movie. Thank you for your kind words. The story is a bit to true. Lut took almost four years to film it and took beautiful footage, unfortunately when I went to the first viewing in Belgium I was shocked to see that she had edited it showing the ugliest moments. Then when i thought of it I realized how brilliant it is. My purpose in agreeing to do the movie was to show the world that no matter race, religion or nationality we are just people. When you see the film you forget we are muslim, living in the middleast and that Ali is Arab and I am american you see people a family with common issues.I hope it will open some hearts. Thanks Linda Al-Saigel
